Right at home in Rwanda

FROZEN | Bow Lake in western Alberta, Canada is located on the Bow River in the Canadian Rockies, at an altitude of 1920 m. The lake lies south of the Bow Summit, east of the Waputik Range and west of the Dolomite Pass, Dolomite Peak and Cirque Peak. As you can see, it is still frozen over. Come Summer, these lakes will melt and become a brilliant turquoise colour. The silt is created when rocks underneath the surface of the ice are grinding from the movement of the glacier. The rock flour is very light and stays suspended in the lake water for a long time. The sunlight that reflects off these particles is what gives the lakes their spectacular turquoise blue or green colour. UNBEARABLE | The excitement of seeing my first bear in the wild in Canada was nearly too much to bear. This black bear I spotted while travelling from Banff to Jasper on what must be one of the most scenic drives in the world - the Icefields Parkway. This bear was grazing on food right next to the highway, unphased by the passing cars. I was shocked to learn that their numbers in this region are quite low. Within the four contiguous Rocky Mountain national parks, population estimates are: Banff National Park: 20-40, Jasper National Park: 90, Yoho National Park: 20-50 and Kootenay National Park: 30-50. So sighting this bear was very lucky. JOURNEY | Continuing the journey through the Rocky Mountains on the Rocky Mountaineer, you pass by ever changing landscapes. At times you will pass through small towns, then desert like terrain where mountain sheep roam, before the landscape morphs into thick forest and then towering mountains capped with snow. The journey is ever changing and the sights, just stunning. There is no time to look away. Despite the cold temperatures, I spent a majority of my time on the outside veiwing platform where you get a real sense of this wild wild terrain. REFLECT | Travelling from Vancouver to Banff via Kamloops on the Rocky Mountaineer, I am spoilt in Gold Class. The windows offer panoramic views along the way as we follow the mountains higher and higher towards Banff. The leg from Vancouver to Kamloops was surprisingly scenic even though there was no snow on the mountains. In Australia, we grew up seeing travel ads about the Rocky Mountaineer, so it seems surreal to be sat here experiencing it first hand. It was lovely to take some time and reflect on the journey so far while staring out the window, watching the world go by. What a magnificent part of the world. PLAYFUL | These seals jostled over the limited realty on a rocky island in the waters of Vancouver. Normally a feast for orcas, I can see why they were keen to keep out of the water. I spotted these guys while out on the water with Prince of Whales whale tour that departs from Granville Island in Vancouver. I was a bit gutted to not see orcas while on this tour, but that is a good excuse to come back. Plus these seals were pretty awesome, some playful and curious ones even swam up to the boat. HIGH | Flying out of Honolulu in Hawai'i with Hawaiian Airlines, the view back at Waikiki and Diamond Head is nothing short of spectacular. I can't help but feel elevated, not only physically but mentally. International travel is getting back to some sort of normality and I am loving the fact that countries are welcoming travellers back, but with a more gentle approach to tourism. New Zealand recently announced their tourism efforts to connect people with country and Hawai'i has adopted a similar approach with their Travel Pono. So as travellers, I urge you to go forth and explore the world again, but do so with respect and a regenerative travel attitude. EARTH 🌎 This Earth Day we recognise the need to invest in the planet. We do not own the planet, we co-exist here with wildlife and wild spaces. Never is the need stronger than now to take greener footsteps. Through travel, you can still explore this magnificent planet, but do so with light tread and a kind heart. Kindness not only to the people you meet, but the planet. The more I travel, the more I am finding incredible ways to give back to the communities and the Earth. On my recent trip to Hawai'i I enjoyed escaping the mass tourism and engaging in a more rewarding experience. At the Kualoa Private Nature Reserve on Ohau you can do the Malama Experience. This hand’s on experience teaches the importance of sustainability and the streams as they feed the loʻi down through the valleys and into the ocean. Learn about how important kalo was to the Hawaiian people for sustenance and its cultural tie-in to Kualoa. Depending on need, activities can include thatching of traditional Hawaiian hale (grass huts), assisting with cleaning, planting, harvesting the kalo (taro) … or mālama of the laʻau lapaʻau (medicinal plants). When you travel, I urge you to seek out experiences like this that give back. Happy Earth Day 2022. LEGEND | Dropped in on the Duke at Waikiki. Duke Paoa Kahinu Mokoe Hulikohola Kahanamoku was a competition swimmer who popularized the sport of surfing in Hawai'i. Also known as "the big kahuna", he is a legend in the surfing world. Growing up watching surfing docos like Endless Summer and listening to the Beach Boys, I always wanted to visit the famed Waikiki beach break for a surf. Needless to say, it was more crowded than the Gold Coast when the Superbank is firing. OLD | The old surf town of Haleiwa is filled with local style and country ambience, as well as cool surf shops and boutiques, charming art galleries and understated restaurants housed in plantation-era building. Make sure you take the time for a stop here on the way to North Shore, it is well worth it.
