I flew Qantas Business Class to South Africa

I recently travelled to South Africa with Qantas in Business Class. Yes, I managed to nab a seat at the pointy end of the plane and it was bliss. The flight from Australia to South Africa is one of the longest ones I normally do, and due to the time difference, I always get hit hard with jetlag.

So to do this flight in Business Class was such a blessing. To be able to lay out and sleep was a godsend. Add to that the extra luxury of pjamas, amazing food and dedicated service from the staff, and it was the perfect way to start my South African journey.

Here is what I thought of Qantas flight QF63 from Sydney to Johannesburg in February 2024. From pre-flight amenities to in-flight service and comfort, I explore every aspect of the journey, providing insights and recommendations for travellers considering this route.

Check-In, Lounge Access and Boarding

As a Business Class passenger flying with Qantas, the journey begins with seamless check-in procedures at Sydney Airport. I did an online check-in to speed up the process but still went to the check-in counter for bag drop and to pick up my fast pass through security. Dedicated check-in counters and priority security lanes ensure a stress-free start to the trip. Upon clearing security, passengers are granted access to Qantas’ luxurious Business Class lounge, offering an array of amenities including gourmet dining options, comfortable seating areas, and shower facilities for those looking to freshen up before their flight.

With priority boarding privileges, passengers in Business Class are among the first to step onboard the aircraft. Welcomed by the attentive cabin crew, travellers are escorted to their seats in a timely and efficient manner, setting the tone for a premium flying experience.

On Board

Qantas’ newest aircraft, the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner is outfitted with 236 seats. The interior features 42 lie flat Business Class seats, 28 Premium Economy seats, and 166 standard Economy seats.

The Seat

Qantas’ Business Class cabin exudes sophistication and comfort, featuring spacious seating arrangements designed for maximum relaxation and productivity during the journey. My seat, 2K, was located in the forward section of the cabin, offering unobstructed views and enhanced privacy, making it an ideal choice for travellers seeking tranquillity and comfort.

The Pitch/Bed Length of this seat is 46in/80in and the width of the seat is 24in – plenty of room to stretch out and even sleep. The seat itself boasts ergonomic design elements, including ample legroom, adjustable headrests, and customizable lumbar support, ensuring a comfortable experience throughout the flight. With intuitive seat controls and ample storage space for personal belongings, passengers have everything they need at their fingertips to make the most of their journey.

In-Flight Entertainment

There was a wide selection of entertainment options, ranging from the latest blockbuster movies to television shows, music, and games, all conveniently accessible via the intuitive touchscreen entertainment system. I was disappointed to find there was no Wi-Fi connectivity on this flight as I needed to get some work done, but with all the space, managed to pull out my laptop and doo a bit of offline work.

Dining Experience

One of the highlights of flying Business Class with Qantas is the exceptional dining experience curated by the airline’s team of award-winning chefs. From gourmet appetizers to decadent desserts, each dish is crafted with precision and attention to detail, showcasing the finest ingredients and flavours from around the world.

I was treated to a multi-course meal service, accompanied by a selection of premium wines, champagne, and spirits, ensuring a truly indulgent culinary journey at 30,000 feet. There was a dinner and breakfast served during this flight. For those looking to satisfy cravings between meals, a range of light snacks and refreshments is available on demand throughout the flight. I did like that you can grab these snacks whenever you like, instead of feeling guilty asking for them.

Service in the sky

Throughout the flight, the cabin crew onboard QF63 exemplify the highest standards of professionalism and hospitality, attending to the needs of Business Class passengers with warmth and efficiency. It was in fact a difficult time for the cabin crew as they had just received news of the death of a fellow cabin crew member, however, the team carried on with their duties with poise and professionalism. From personalized welcome greetings to attentive service throughout the journey, every interaction is marked by genuine care and dedication to ensuring passenger comfort and satisfaction.

Overall Opinion

As QF63 made its descent into Johannesburg, I reflected on a journey characterized by luxury, comfort, and unparalleled service. From the moment of check-in to the final farewell, Qantas delivers a Business Class experience that exceeded my expectations, setting the standard for premium air travel on long-haul routes. For travellers seeking the ultimate in comfort and convenience on their journey to Johannesburg, Qantas’ Business Class is undoubtedly the way to fly.
