VIEW | Talk about a room with a view here at Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. It was hard to leave the warm cosy slippers and venture out to the Lake which was still frozen over this time of the year. At 1540 metres, Lake Louise Village is Canada’s highest town, and the community formed around the Chateau Lake Louise sits at 1731 metres. So I am feeling quite high right now, literally and emotionally as this fairytale castle looking Chateau has been a place I have dreamed of visiting since I was a little girl. DISTANCE | The chance of spotting Grizzly Bears in Jasper National Park is something most visitors hope for. It is important to remember that these animals are dangerous when human interactions come into play. So keep your distance and be bear smart. If we want to be able to watch these amazing animals long into the future, we must be responsible travellers and give them the space they need. Never get out of your vehicle to get closer. Allow the bear to come to you but ensure your interaction is a positive one for the animal. WAPITI | The elk is one of the largest species within the deer family, Cervidae. Elk are also known by their indigenous name, “wapiti,” meaning “white rump,” given to them by the Shawnee people because of the animal’s light patch of beige hair on their otherwise dark brown-colored body. Elk are considered of “Least Concern” by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, and their numbers have continued to increase thanks to conservation measures. They are very social and normally hang out in herds. This guy (you can tell he is male by his velvet covered antlers) was grazing with two other elks in Jasper National Park. FIERCE | This grizzly was one of two siblings I saw in Jasper National Park. They were quite blonde, normally the fur is much darker. I was fascinated by the size of the claws on grizzly bears. These long, curved claws (5 -10 cm) are often used by grizzly bears to dig in search of insects, root parts, and ground squirrels. They also use their claws as a way to excavate and open up dens. The power of the grizzly bear is fierce and frightening, I would not like to be getting a bear hug with those claws. PEAK | A sneaky little peak hole through this tree reveals the gem of a place on the otherside of the lake that is Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge. I am seriously in love with this place. There is so much magic and energy bouncing around the wilderness from those towering Rocky Mountains. I could live here. PERFECT | I arrived in Jasper at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge and needless to say, this photo says it all. Picture perfect, and perfect in person. The lake is crystal clear, the mountain air pure and the stillness throws some stunning reflections. This is literally the view from my cabin - minus a white tailed deer that has been hanging around and keeping me company. POWER | The bighorn sheep use their horns as a powerful tool in combat when fighting over mates and food. During the fall mating season, rams battle for dominance by crashing horns together until the weaker animal gives up. Bighorn sheep are fairly common in Jasper National Park; their populations hover around 3000. I spotted this guy and his mates on the cliff beside the road, before they came down the cliff (at times vertically) and crossed the road to the lake on the otherside. Stunning animals to photograph. NIMBLE | I snapped the photo of this mountain goat with the Canon EOS R5 with the 800mm lens. It was over 800m away perched high on the side of the cliff. It was actually moving quite fast so I was delighted with the capacity of the camera and lens to capture it. Mountain goats can be distinguished by their white coats, beards, and short black dagger-like horns. Surprisingly, mountain goats are actually not goats, but belong to a family of mountain antelopes. Females or nannies and their kids often form groups during the summer, but males or "billies" are generally solitary. During the rut, fights between billies are rare, but when they do occur, they are vicious. ICE | Located in the Canadian Rockies, the Athabasca Glacier is one of the principal 'toes' of the Columbia Icefield in Jasper National Park. The Columbia Icefield, sitting on the Alberta-British Columbia border, is the largest in the Rocky Mountains of North America. Sadly, this glacier is disappearing at an alarming rate due to climate change. The glacier has lost more than half of its total volume over the past 125 years. Currently, the Athabasca Glacier loses its depth at a rate of 16 ft (5 m) each year, losing 0.93 mi (1.5 km) until now. One clear impact is the threat to sea levels around the globe. As the largest icefield in North America, the Columbia Icefield feeds the Arctic, North Atlantic, and Pacific oceans. Increased melt-water from the icefield directly contributes to higher sea-levels around the globe. I had the opportunity to step foot on this glacier and felt conflicted as I questioned if the very vehicles that took me there and the large numbers of tourists visiting are contributing to the damage.
